He is actually Turkish, but looks like a Bavarian: small, sturdy, a bit on the fat side. He speaks German like a Czech, wears the kind of glasses the Japanese favour, switches from being the perfect gentleman from Oxford to the dourest Swabian. His great-grandparents were from Caucasia. His father is Circassian, his mother half Turkish and half Circassian. His grandchildren have American, Hispanic American or German fathers and Turkish or French mothers. In fact, his personal life resembles a UN all of his own. Dikmen’s programme about
religion is far from a crusade or diatribe: but is by turns cunning, funny, provocative and conciliatory.
