»Three people come together while searching for a home. Nasuhi,
returning home after many years in Russian exile chances on his
nephew, Selim who is about to start a new life in the USA. And then
Nasuhi also meets Olga, a Russian woman looking for her father.«
Semih Kaplanoglu’s debut film shows three people desperately
searching for their place in the world. »Away from Home«
received the »Best Turkish Film« award among others
at the International Istanbul Film Festival in 2001.
Istanbul: a young foreign woman has been murdered and now the police
is questioning the neighbours in room number 9 of the police station.
Little by little, they reveal their innermost, and most secret wishes,
their antipathies and their resentments. »9« is an excellent
montage of six police interrogations packed with suspense, a psychogram
that also shows incidents of police violence. The director, Ümit
Ünal, is also a well-known author and poet. He shot »9«
in Turkey, his first film using innovative DV technology.
