Istanbul: a young foreign woman has been murdered and now the police is questioning the neighbours in room number 9 of the police station. Little by little, they reveal their innermost, and most secret wishes, their antipathies and their resentments. »9« is an excellent montage of six police interrogations packed with suspense, a psychogram that also shows incidents of police violence. The director, Ümit Ünal, is also a well-known author and poet. He shot »9« in Turkey, his first film using innovative DV technology.

Life on their shoulders: Winner of Peace and Blue Angel Awards of the Berlinale, director Yeşim Ustaoğlu accompanied four women on a mountain hike to a highland massif and produced a thoughtful documentary film of the trip. Ay‚e, Fatma, Havva and Hatice fight their way laboriously to the top, enduring endless rain before reaching their goal at the summit. Impressed by the women’s strength, their unfailing struggle and perseverance, the director was inspired to ponder the meaning of existence and time.
