Life on their shoulders: Winner of Peace and Blue Angel Awards of
the Berlinale, director Yeşim
Ustaoğlu accompanied four
women on a mountain hike to a highland massif and produced a thoughtful
documentary film of the trip. Ay‚e, Fatma, Havva and Hatice
fight their way laboriously to the top, enduring endless rain before
reaching their goal at the summit. Impressed by the women’s
strength, their unfailing struggle and perseverance, the director
was inspired to ponder the meaning of existence and time.
Journey to the Sun: Mehmet’s promising start in Istanbul comes
to an abrupt end, when the police mistake him for a Kurd on account
of his dark complexion. Berzan, living in the slums of the city,
sells audio-cassettes from a push-cart on the streets of Istanbul.
Arzu, who works at a laundry shop, is more experienced in coping
with the big city, but in reality, she too is trying to survive
just like the others. »Journey to the Sun« attempts
to touch on realities of recent years in Turkey by looking at life
through the eyes of three young people, perceiving Istanbul as a
microcosm of Turkey.
